Hibiscus Holiday Park

Caloundra QLD

We had checked out a couple of parks before settling in for our three night Caloundra stay.  Of the three parks we looked at, one appeared to be full of perms and have limited & very narrow access to sites.  The other made us feel very boxed in with high rise buildings closing in on two sides. A very good humoured greeting from the office personnel at Hibiscus Caravan Park, the willingness to be accommodating in negotiating our preferred site, unrushed time to decide, set up and have a cuppa before settling the account certainly did lead to a very positive first impression.  Regardless of gloomy weather forecasts, we were convinced we were going to be very comfortable at Hibiscus.  A fourth park in Caloundra was not investigated due to no slab sites available at the time.

The gloomy weather forecast did prevail - extreme blustery south-easterly winds and intermittent heavy rain.  No doubt this led to a very 'unseasonably' quiet park considering this was an early autumn weekend stay. Hibiscus is located very central to down-town Caloundra as well as adjoining the waters of Pumicestone Passage.  Although situated on the main street and just down from the town centre, the park has a natural environment, and from our site at the waterways end of the park, we heard the birds rather than any traffic noise.  The main street access does mean you have to cross over a couple of lanes getting in and out of the park - depending on traffic times this can present a minor challenge, however nearby traffic lights do regulate traffic flow.  The park has been established for many years, and although its' age shows, it is neatly presented and clean without an unnatural 'manicure'.  Some refurbishment of the amenities building was about to get under way. and management were keeping residents and visitors very well informed about timing and arrangements.

We particularly enjoyed the park's location - a pleasant walk along the passage foreshore and boardwalk, along the south to Golden Beach or downtown to shops, cinema, restaurants and the Sunday morning markets.  In less windy conditions, we could have thrown in a line not too many feet away from our site, or put the tinnie in from a "tinnie size" ramp in the park.  Sites are well defined with concrete slabs with easy access to power, water & sewerage.  Safety is also considered with all slabs and pavement irregularities painted with a with white edging.

What was different to other places we've stayed?   - We particularly liked that each site had its' own refuse bin as well as recycle bins placed at easy distance amongst the sites;  friendly, quiet, and centrally located.
