Bored – there’s
no such word in their lifestyle. ‘Each
day is different bringing a new adventure and strangers to meet, whom
then become friends – all of whom invite us back when we next traverse
the Continent. Bored – no
way.’ Peter and Diana. love
their Swagman and proudly show it off to all interested people.
They tell us that, ‘however, as good as the Swagman is – they
still can get bogged’, as these tales they have shared with us tell.
Talk about the big wide yonder…… the first occurred during a
visit back to home-town Sydney! With all close relatives living in suburbia with too small a front yard or one that’s on the side of a hill!! – a friend (think we’re still friends after this happened) invited us to park for our three-week stay at the back of their nursery in Warriewood, in the northern beaches area. Twelve inches of rain later, you can imagine what the area around us looked like.
|
Our
friend assured us that there was hard compacted rock and bricks below,
not so – our beloved Swagman went down to both axles.
When the sun shone again, Peter dug trenches for the wheels –
for two days!
A lesson learnt – we were facing the wrong way – a flat top and then a tow truck tried to pull us out – no way! – there was just not enough room for them to manoeuvre at the back. A friend of our friend, with a 4 x 4 came to the rescue after he and Peter put some sheets of reinforcing mesh in the trenches behind the back wheels. A couple of strong pulls with the 4 x 4, and the mesh being moved twice, and we were again on hard ground! Halleluiah! – and so we moved on. In Western Austraila there is a lovely area called Eagle Bluff, near Monkey Mia – crystal clear turquoise water, and wonderful white sand! Following down a hard packed sandy track with travelling companions in |
tow, we found the spot
where we wanted to stay for the night.
Great! – until we went to turn around in the area.
Our back driver’s side wheels caught on some saltbush causing
us to stop. Too late – we
slipped off the hard packed sand, and when Peter reversed to get off the
bush, down we went. An old
hand now, Peter commenced to dig! Fortunately
this didn’t take as long as previous saga and a couple of beers and
helping hands from our travelling companions took the sting out of this
one. Postscript:
We met Peter and Diana at a WorkAbout Australia Club get-together
here on the Gold Coast mid 2003. When
you meet them, their love for their lifestyle shines through and their
eagerness to share themselves leaves no doubt that as they travel, they
spread a bit of themselves across Australia, leaving memories in the
minds of many, as well as gaining fond ones for themselves.
