100 years of national parks in Queensland

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is celebrating 100 years of national parks in Queensland from March 2008. Celebrations are planned throughout the year and will include exhibits in the Queensland Museum, national parks and regional exhibition venues.

A section of Millstream Falls National Park was the first park gazetted in north Queensland. The park is rich in Aboriginal and European history and protects the Millstream Falls, reputedly the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia. During World War II the Millstream Falls National Park was a campsite for troops of the 7th (18th, 21st and 25th Brigades) and 9th (20th, 24th and 26th Brigades) Divisions of the Australian Army. Evidence of their time spent in the national park can still be seen in the park by way of old trails, remnants of building and other infrastructure.

Centenary of parks celebrations at Millstream Falls will be held on 21 June 2008. The World War II heritage walk, which travels through the area used by the 2/14th and 2/28th Battalions, will be officially opened and a range of guided walks, activities and displays will be on offer.

Millstream Falls National Park is 3.5km from Ravenshoe which is 147km from Cairns via the Gillies Highway.

Visitors to the park will need to park at Ravenshoe Rail in the main street of Ravenshoe and catch one of the regular (15min) shuttles to the park.  Please use the shuttle as you may well be turned away at the gate otherwise.
